Jamaica and Panama play to 1-1 draw

Jamaica’s Reggae Boyz played to a 1-1 draw with the visiting Panama on Friday in a CONCACAF World Cup qualifier at the National Stadium.

Jamaica took the lead in the 22nd minute when Marvin Elliott headed a well placed Demar Phillips’ right-sided corner kick inside the far post. It was the first-ever goal for the 28-year-old Elliott wearing the Jamaican colors.

Panama came close to scoring three minutes before the break, when a lunging Blas Perez just failed to connect on a low cross from Leonel Parris.

Panama fought back and found the equalizer in the 66th minute when Luis Henriquez fired a shot from distance that took a deflection and bounced past a diving Donovan Ricketts in goal. Late in the game Jamaica almost found the winner when Garath McCleary’s shot from 18-yards out drifted just beyond the left post.

Both sides have two points from their opening two Hexagonal games and sit two points behind first-place Honduras. Jamaica will next travels to Costa Rica while Panama will welcome Honduras next Tuesday

In other games the United States defeated Costa Rica 1-0 and Honduras scored twice late in the second half to rally for a 2-2 draw with Mexico
